A Calm, Fully Guided Newborn Experience

Newborn sessions at my Salem, New Hampshire studio are designed to be calm, comfortable and completely centered around your baby. There is no pressure to rush through feedings, soothing or diaper changes. We work at the pace your baby needs that day.

I have photographed newborns and families throughout Southern New Hampshire and the Greater Boston area since 2005. With more than 20 years of professional photography experience, specialized newborn posing education and APNPI certification, I understand how to create carefully posed portraits without compromising your baby’s comfort or safety.

Every session is planned for you. The studio includes wraps, outfits, blankets, props and accessories, along with diapers, wipes and pacifiers. You can arrive with your baby and know that the important details have already been considered.

Newborn Safety Comes First

Your baby's safety is my top priority.

Newborn posing requires patience, specialized training and an understanding of how babies communicate discomfort. I never force a pose or continue with a setup that is not appropriate for your baby. If your baby needs to be fed, changed, held or soothed, we pause.

The Salem studio is kept warm for your baby’s comfort. Wraps, blankets, outfits and posing surfaces are cleaned and sanitized between sessions, and parents remain nearby throughout the entire process.

A full newborn session typically lasts two to three hours. That time allows us to move slowly through family portraits, wrapped poses, props and individual newborn portraits while allowing as many breaks as your baby needs.

What to Expect During Your Session

When you arrive at the Salem studio, we will take a few minutes to get settled and review the plans for your session. There is no need to immediately begin photographing if your baby needs to eat, be changed or become comfortable in the space.

Most full newborn sessions include a combination of:

  • Wrapped newborn portraits
  • Individual posed newborn images
  • Simple prop or basket setups
  • Close-up photographs of hands, feet and facial details
  • Parent and baby portraits
  • Sibling photographs
  • Complete family portraits

Family and sibling portraits are usually completed near the beginning of the session so young children do not have to wait through the entire newborn portion. After those photographs are finished, one parent may take the siblings for a break while we continue with the baby.

The final gallery is designed to give you a meaningful variety of photographs rather than multiple copies of the same pose. After the session, you will receive an online proofing gallery where you can choose the images you would like professionally finished.

Timing Your Newborn Session

Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled during the first two to three weeks after birth, when babies often sleep more deeply and naturally settle into wrapped and curled positions. Sessions can also be completed when a baby is older, although additional time and flexibility may be needed.

You do not need to know your baby’s exact arrival date when booking. I reserve your due date on my calendar during pregnancy. Once your baby arrives and you have had time for the first pediatric appointments, you can contact me and we will choose the actual session date.

Babies do not always arrive according to plan. If your baby is early, late or needs additional time in the hospital, we will adjust the schedule.

How to Reserve Your Newborn Session

Contact me during pregnancy to reserve availability around your due date. After your baby arrives, we will confirm the session date and I will send a questionnaire to help plan the colors, setups, family portraits and other details.

FAQ

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SCHEDULE A NEWBORN SESSION?

Newborn sessions are ideally photographed during the first two to three weeks after birth. Babies are often sleepier and naturally curl into newborn positions during this time. I recommend reserving your session during pregnancy so I can hold availability around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we will confirm the actual session date.

DO YOU PROVIDE PROPS AND OUTFITS FOR NEWBORN SESSIONS?

Yes. The studio includes a carefully selected collection of newborn wraps, blankets, outfits, headbands, hats, baskets and props. Everything used during a session is cleaned between babies. You are also welcome to bring a meaningful heirloom or personal item, and we can decide whether it can be incorporated safely.

HOW LONG DOES A NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION TAKE?

A full newborn session generally takes two to three hours. This allows time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, family portraits and transitions between setups without rushing your baby. Petite newborn sessions are shorter and include a simpler wrapped setup with fewer transitions.

CAN SIBLINGS AND PARENTS BE INCLUDED IN NEWBORN PHOTOS?

Yes. Parent, sibling and complete family portraits can be included in a full newborn session. Family and sibling photographs are generally completed near the beginning so young children do not have to remain in the studio throughout the full session. I provide guidance for clothing, positioning and preparing siblings before the session.
